€5,082.00
François Pompon (1855–1933) was a distinguished French sculptor born in Saulieu who played a pivotal role in modern sculpture. Coming from a family of craftsmen, he began his artistic journey apprenticing under his father, a skilled carpenter and cabinetmaker. At the age of 15, Pompon honed his skills in stone by training as a stonemason.
In 1875, he moved to Paris to attend the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs, marking the beginning of his formal education in the arts. By 1879, he started exhibiting his first sculptures—mainly portraits—at the Salon. Despite his talent, Pompon struggled to gain recognition and notoriety for his work. To support himself and refine his craft, he worked as a practitioner for other established artists.
Pompon's dedication and unique approach eventually led him to capture the essence of animals in simplified yet expressive forms, a style that would become his signature and earn him acclaim. His journey reflects the perseverance and passion that defined the artists of his era, leaving a lasting impact on the world of sculpture.
