Travertine Marble Borghese Centaurs - Pair
€0.00
This beautiful marble sculptures of Borghese Centaurs are masterfully crafted, hand-carved of hand-selected high quality white marble.
The centaurs, mythical creatures that are half-man, half-horse, are depicted here as old, bearded men with tortured faces and their arms tied behind their backs. These marble statues are based on a famous ancient Roman marble sculpture in the Louvre.
The original sculpture was made in the late 1st or early 2nd century AD based on Hellenistic models and was meant to remind the Roman spectator of the soul tormented by love, which is also emphasised by Eros riding on him in the sculpture in the Louvre. Like the similar so-called Furietti centaurs, the Borghese centaur, found in Rome in the 17th century, is considered a masterpiece of ancient sculpture. It was purchased by Emperor Napoleon from the Borghese collection in 1807 and travelled to Paris and later to the Louvre.
